Cavernous Sinus Thrombosis


DEFINITION
Cavernous sinus thrombosis is a blockage of large veins at the base of the brain (cavernous sinus).

Cavernous sinus thrombosis is rare. 30% of patients who died and survived having a mental disability or serious neurological disability despite treatment.


CAUSE
This blockage is usually caused by the spread of bacterial infection of the sinuses or around the nose. Infection spreads from the sinuses or the skin around the nose to the brain either directly or through a vein.


SYMPTOMS
Symptoms include:
  • protrusion of the eyeball
  • severe headache
  • coma
  • seizures
  • other nervous system disorders
  • high fever.


DIAGNOSIS
Diagnosis based on symptoms and physical examination.

To determine the cause of bacterial infections of the blood examination and sample fluid, mucus or pus from the throat and nose. Usually also performed a CT scan sinus, eye and brain.


TREATMENT
Immediately given high doses of antibiotics intravenously (through a vein). If within 24 hours of the person's condition does not improve, surgery to drain the sinus (drainage).
