Definition

Self-care includes everything that is needed by individuals in their daily lives.

Self-care is one of the basic abilities of humans to meet their needs in order to maintain their lives, health and well-being according to their health conditions, patients otherwise disrupted self-care, if unable to perform self-care.

Self-care deficit is a disorder of the ability to perform self-care activities (bathing, dressing, eating, toileting).

According to Poter and Perry (2005), personal hygine is an action to maintain cleanliness and health of a person for physical and psychological well-being, lack of self-care is a condition where a person is unable to perform hygiene care for himself.

Personal hygine comes from Greek which means personal, which means individual and hygine means healthy. Personal hygiene is an action to maintain the cleanliness and health of a person for physical and psychological well-being.


Types of Self-care Deficits
There are several types of self-care deficits:
a. Self-care deficit: bathing / cleanliness. Self-care deficit (bathing) is a disorder of the ability to carry out bathing / personal hygiene activities.
b. Self-care deficit : wearing clothes. Self-care deficit (wearing clothes) is a disruption of the ability to wear clothes and dress up activities themselves.
c. Self-care deficit : eating. Self-care deficit (eating) is a disorder of the ability to show eating activities.
d. Self-care deficit : toileting. Self-care deficit (toileting) is an impaired ability to do or complete toileting activities on its own.


Causes of Self-care Deficits :

a. Prediposition factor

1) Biological
Chronic diseases that cause patients unable to perform self-care. Medical history of the frontal lobe structure, where the lobe affects cognitive processes, there is a family history of mental disorders, disorders of the limbic system will affect the function of attention, memory and oxygen supply and impaired glucose.

2) Decreased Psychological Ability
Patients with mental disorders with a lack of reality ability cause ignorance of themselves and the environment including self-care.

Some psychological problems that cause self-care deficits include:
a) Low self-esteem: patients have no motivation to care for themselves.
b) Body image: the individual's image of him greatly influences personal hygiene, for example with physical changes so that the individual does not care about his personal hygiene.
3) Social
Lack of support and exercise the ability of self-care environment. Environmental situations affect the exercise of ability in self-care.

b. Precipitation factor
The precipitating factor of self-care deficit is lack of motivation, cognitive or perceptual damage, anxiety, fatigue or weakness experienced by individuals, causing individuals to be less able to perform self-care.

The factors that influence personal hygiene are:
1) Body image. The individual's image of him greatly influences personal hygiene for example with physical changes so that the individual does not care about his personal hygiene.
2) Social practice. In children - children are always spoiled in personal hygiene, then there is likely to be a change in personal hygiene patterns.
3) Socioeconomic status. Personal hygiene requires tools and materials such as soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo, toiletries which all require money to provide.
4) Knowledge. Personal hygiene knowledge is very important because good knowledge can improve health. For example in patients with diabetes mellitus he must maintain the cleanliness of his feet.
5) Culture. In a part of the community if certain sick individuals may not be bathed.
6) A person's habits. There are habits of people who use certain products in self-care such as the use of soap, shampoo and others.
7) Physical or psychological condition. In certain circumstances / illness the ability to care for themselves decreases and needs help to do it.


Impacts that often arise on personal hygiene problems:

1. Physical impact
Many health problems suffered by a person due to poor personal hygiene, physical disorders that often occur are: disorders of skin integrity, disorders of the oral mucous membranes, infections of the eyes and ears and physical disorders of the nails.

2. Psychosocial Impact
Social problems related to personal hygiene are the disruption of comfort needs, the need to be loved and loved, the need for self-esteem, self-actualization and the disruption of social interaction.

Signs and Symptoms
Signs and symptoms of patients with self-care deficits are:
1) Physical
Body odor, dirty clothes, dirty hair and skin, long and dirty nails, dirty teeth accompanied, bad mouth, unclean appearance.
2) Psychological
Lazy, no initiative, withdrawal, isolation, feeling helpless, inferior and insulting.
3) Social
Less interaction, less activity, unable to behave according to norms. How to eat irregularly like tubs and chapters in any place, brush your teeth and take a bath can not be independent.
